Growth @ the Skatepark

At Midcoast Youth Center & Skatepark, we have a student who has always admired the daring tricks performed by others on their scooters. In March, R– decided it was time to face their fears and attempt a trick they had never tried before. This particular scooter acrobatic required not only skill but also a great deal of courage and confidence.

With determination, and a healthy dose of nervousness, R– built up their courage through trial and error. They practiced tirelessly, each day pushing themselves a little further. Alongside was a supportive mentor, offering encouragement and guidance every step of the way.

After weeks the day came when R– felt “ready.” With their heart pounding and their mind focused by adrenaline and practice, they took a deep breath and went for it. To everyone’s amazement, R– landed the scooter trick perfectly on their first try! It was as if they had always known how to do it!

Cheers and clapping erupted from the MYC on-lookers as relief and pride spread across our newest trickster’s face. Ever since that day in March, with the gloom outside and the warmth of adventure inside, R– performs their new scooter skill with ease and grace.

Since that day I see their confidence shining through! Like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, they realized that the ability had always been within them; they just needed to unlock it with self-belief and determination. And so, they continue to conquer new challenges, knowing that — with the right mindset — anything is possible.

As the MYC Skatepark Manager, I am often inspired by witnessing students push themselves and grow both as riders and individuals. As a lifelong skater myself, I quietly celebrate the ways that these “extreme sports,” once frowned upon, have reached the mainstream including Olympic levels. Who knows, this could be the story of a future Olympian who found a place to learn and succeed, thanks to a community that recognized its potential to transform lives.

I look forward to a day when we can expand our lessons program, host large action sports summer camps and contests, and serve more young people who are inspired and supported to take healthy risks and grow right here at MYC.

Thanks,

Andrew
